Letter to the Editor: Tourist Crime Incident

Eye on St. Kitts received the following Letter to the Editor on 3/27/2011. This is a sensitive matter because the island has become so dependent on tourism to uphold its economy. For that reason, we’re concerned that such stories will be suppressed by the government and/or the media. If you recently traveled to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and were the victim of a crime, please contact us at eyeonstkitts[at]gmail[dot]com.

Dear Eye on St. Kitts,

Just got back from St. Kitts and began to research the crime rate on it. Wish we had known about it before our vacation. While we were warned of petty theft, we were also repeatedly told that the Frigate Bay area was safe. Indeed, we felt very safe there. We drove independently around the whole island repeatedly and also felt safe in small towns where we regularly encountered locals. Our last night, however, was another matter.

While out to dinner on Friday evening, our rental house was broken into while we were out. We returned around 11pm to find the thieves had gotten away with our laptop, a cell phone, and an Ipod. Entry was made through a bathroom window which they forced open. We were staying on Fort Tyson Rise in Frigate Bay.

We’ll be adding this incident to our crime report map.

I would be interested to know if by Fort Tyson Rise the writer means Horizons. Everyone on island seems to know that Friday night is break-in night at Horizons. Kind of sad when it’s become a bit of a joke, but that’s the way it is. I don’t know of anyone who owns/rents there, that has not been broken into, and usually more than once. Even with burglar bars. The police force is not responsive at all. Just saying.
